The Diorama: A Visual Art with History

The diorama is a three-dimensional art form that depicts scenes in miniature, combining figures, landscapes and lighting effects to create a unique visual experience. The term "diorama" comes from the Greek: "dia" (through) and "horama" (view), which reflects the essence of the diorama - to show detailed and realistic views.

Since ancient times, the diorama has been used by different cultures for a variety of purposes. In Egypt, they found their place in tombs as representations of the afterlife. In Japan, dioramas evoke nostalgia by recreating everyday scenes.

Today, dioramas are very popular with artists and are used in museums to interactively depict historical moments or ecosystems. The diorama remains a timeless technique that connects the viewer with miniature worlds.

River of Painted Birds – Carolina Acosta Figueiras

Carolina Acosta Figueiras, a Uruguayan artist based in Vienna, is dedicated to digital illustration and diorama composition. She also occasionally works with photography, videography and traditional artistic media.

Her works often focus on female figures, but her creative approach is strongly influenced by emotions and spontaneous inspiration. This intuitive way of working allows her to create improvisationally and let her ideas flow freely. Her main inspirations range from Pop Art and Surrealism to towards psychedelic and dreamlike elements.

Despite these influences, Carlonia consciously avoids a fixed stylistic categorization. She also wants to give viewers the freedom to interpret her works individually. Everyone should have the opportunity to discover their own meanings and stories in her pictures.
