Mexican cartonería, or papier-mâché art, is a traditional craft technique that has its origins in the colonial era. This art form came to Mexico along with evangelization and became closely linked to religious celebrations. From the first piñatas to the "Judas figures" burned during Holy Week, papier-mâché served as a medium to express culture, creativity and spirituality.

Why papier-mâché?

This technique was quickly adopted by the population because the materials were cheap and readily available. With paper, paste and a great deal of creativity, not only piñatas were created, but also numerous other objects: "lolitas" (moving dolls), colorful "calacas" (skulls), and the famous "alebrijes", which are now known worldwide.
Mexican cartonería evolved over time. At first, many artisans worked anonymously, but their works and skills gained recognition through collaborations with famous artists such as Diego Rivera. One of the most famous masters of this art form is Pedro Linares, who is considered the creator of the Alebrijes.
These colorful, fantastical creatures were born from a dream of Linares and quickly became a symbol of Mexican popular belief and culture. Linares received the National Prize for Sciences and Arts in 1990 for his contribution to Mexican art.
The art of cartonería is continued by the so-called Maestros Cartoneros, whose works are appreciated all over the world. Using materials such as wire, different types of paper and paste, they create impressive sculptures that carry a piece of Mexican culture. Another notable artist in this tradition is Carmen Caballero, a master of Judas figures, whose works can still be seen today in Diego Rivera's house museum.

The relevance of the Cartonería today

At a time when traditional craftsmanship is becoming increasingly recognized, Mexican papier-mâché art is experiencing a new blossoming. It represents the revival of cultural values and the combination of handicrafts with contemporary expression. Whether in the form of colorful alebrijes or large papier-mâché sculptures at festivals and parades - the cartonería remains a living testimony to Mexican culture.
Today it is easier than ever to take a piece of this tradition home with you or to take courses to learn the technique of cartonería.
This allows everyone to discover their own creativity and create a unique work of art out of paper. The magic of papier-mâché lies in its ability to take on any imaginable shape - an expression of the imagination, culture and history of Mexico.

Paper Art: Bringing Creativity to Life – The World of Sonia Siblik

Sonia Siblik has been deeply immersed in the world of art since childhood, inspired by her father's passion for collecting. This early encounter with art and culture shaped her own vision of art education. After completing pedagogical training in Vienna, she developed her creative ideas and founded Lichtraum eins by Paul Siblik - a unique place that combines art and encounters. Since 2007, she has been curating and organizing exhibitions here that radiate a very special magic through the intense proximity to art and artists. With innovative projects such as "Street/Art - Art on the Fence" and the "1st Vienna ArtPark", launched in 2023, she brings art into urban space. These initiatives create inspiring encounters in everyday life and open up new perspectives on art in public spaces. As the founder of the LichTraum association of artistic community projects, she promotes collaborative art that focuses on creativity and community.
Her workshops, especially in papier-mâché and creative art education, offer participants the opportunity to experience art up close. This creates an atmosphere in which ideas flow and people come together. For Sonia Siblik, art is more than just expression - it is a lively exchange that ignites the potential in others and builds cultural bridges.
Visit us and experience the magic of art up close!
